Our Instructors
Sensei: Berris Sweeney
has trained in the martial arts since 1973 and currently holds a 5th degree Black Belt in Shindo-Ryu Karate and a 3rd degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate. He also holds rank in Aikido, Kickboxing, and Capoeira. He was an active tournament competitor from 1975 – 1996, competing in sparring, forms and weapons divisions. He has three world champion titles and is a four-time European Champion who was ranked second in Kickboxing from 1980 - 1982.
Senpai: John Eason
has been with Sweeney’s Karate since 2007. Through self-discipline in training and excellent technique in training, he has been an inspiration to every student at the dojo. It does not matter how big the challenge is, Senpai John will find a way to rise above it – which is exactly what Sweeney’s Karate is all about!His love of karate, strong determination to succeed, and hard work gave him the ability to promote to Brown Belt in February 2010.
Kyoshi: Tommy Chen
has over four decades of martial arts experience. He is a five-time inductee in the Black Belt Hall of Fame, and spent decades as a top ranked national martial arts competitor. His objective has always been to lead by example while he brings true martial arts to the community by adhering to the traditional principles of the martial way of life. The product of this philosophy is discipline, goal-setting, and an understanding between good and bad martial arts. Kyoshi Chen’s arrival to Sweeney’s Karate will bring martial arts to a higher level in the community. And his success as a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) instructor in New York City is sure to bring a few champions to Goldsboro as well.
